Why is daylight saving happening on a different day in Paris and New York?
Time change is a bit like playing hide and seek with the sun! In the fall, we turn back the clocks to enjoy daylight for longer. For example, this helps save energy and reduce accidents because it gets daylight later in the day. It’s a fun way to adapt to the seasons while keeping our lifestyle active!
The adoption of daylight saving started 58 years apart in Paris and NYC.
France adopted daylight saving time in 1976, while the United States introduced it during World War I, as early as 1918. The practice aims to save energy and take advantage of more daylight. Since then, both countries continue to change their clocks every spring and fall, bringing a little confusion but also a hint of joy to the changing seasons!
So… Why do we have DST on different dates in Paris and NYC in the fall?
It’s actually quite simple! The United States and Europe have different rules for changing the time. In France, we switch to winter time on the last Sunday in October, while in New York, it is the first Sunday in November. This creates a fun little shift in our clocks. Basically, each country does DST in their own way!
