Five French Titles for Your Christmas Movie Marathon

A Christmas film for the History buffs and the epic drama lovers.

Joyeux Noël (2005)

Joyeux Noël (2005)

Available for rent on most streaming platforms.

This epic drama is inspired by a true story, which took place during the Great War, on Christmas Eve 1914. When war breaks out in the summer of 1914, it catches millions of men off guard. And then… Christmas arrived, with its snow and its procession of gifts from families and the military.

But the main surprise doesn’t not come from the generous packages found all over the French, Scottish and German trenches. That evening, a considerable event is to change forever the destiny of four characters: a Scottish clergyman, a French lieutenant, a German tenor and a Danish soprano, "stars" of the time who, thanks to the Christmas night of 1914, find themselves at the heart of an unprecedented fraternization between German, French and British soldiers.

They will leave the rifle at the bottom of the trench to go and see the one opposite, shake his hand, exchange with him a cigarette and some chocolate, wish him "Merry Christmas!"

Why should it be part of your Christmas binge?

This deeply moving work transports you in the heart of WWI. This beautifully directed and acted drama fleshes out a singular piece of History and turns it into a memorable film. A five-star cast (Guillaume Canet, Diane Kruger).

Why should it be part of your Christmas binge? Alain Chabat, a French comedy living legend, wrote, directed and acted in this light family film. This festive movie is a a funny, touching, lively Christmas comedy with a touch of fantasy. If this flick doesn’t put a smile on your face from beginning to end, I don’t know what will!

Why should it be part of your Christmas binge? Tahar Rahim, known for his much darker parts in The Mauritanian and The Serpent, leads this film with a communicative energy. A Christmas series for romcom fans

Christmas Flow (2021)

The modern twist on well-known Christmas tales makes it an enjoyable Christmas watch. If you liked The Hookup Plan, you’ll love Christmas Flow!

A Christmas film for the French culture aficionados and the comedy buffs

Le Père Noël est une ordure (1982)

Le Père Noël est une ordure (1982)

Unfortunately, it looks like this film isn’t available for streaming in the United States! Which is a shame, given that this is The cult Christmas comedy. Led by an unforgettable cast (Le Splendid, also famous in France for French Fried Vacations 1,2 and 3), this goofy comedy is to die for. Watch it over and over, like the French do (at least ten lines from this film are part of our daily conversations).
