Our founder’s travel pick: two days in Magda’s favorite French city, Marseille

Discover the unique history of Marseille, the second most-populated city in France. Only a three-hour train ride from Paris, Marseille is definitely the most cosmopolitan and sunny place in our country!

Here’s a breakdown of how to spend two days in the sunny city of Marseille.

Day 1

Start your day on the Old Port, the historic heart of Marseille. Walk along the docks, admire the fishing boats and yachts. Don't miss the fish market (open every morning). For breakfast, stop at a local cafe for coffee and a croissant - couldn’t get more local.

Head towards the Panier, the oldest neighborhood in the city. This lovely district is filled with narrow streets, local crafts and small boutiques. For lunch, you must try bouillabaisse, the famous Marseille fish soup, served in most restaurants.

Finally, a first day isn’t complete without visiting the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde. This iconic church offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire city and the Mediterranean Sea.

Day 2

Start your second day with a visit to the MuCEM, a modern museum that explores Mediterranean cultures. The building itself is a stunning work of art. While you’re there, explore the surrounding gardens as well.

When you’re done, head to La Joliette for lunch in one of the neighborhood’s trendy restaurants. You can try local or international dishes. It’s a very vibrant and cheerful neighborhood that you’ll remember for a while.

In the afternoon, go for an excursion to the Calanques, a national park located between Marseille and Cassis. You can choose either hike or hop on a boat to admire the scenery and the gorgeous turquoise waters.

If most of Paris has a ‘been there, done that’ feel, but you don’t think you’re done with France, Marseille is definitely a city you must explore.
